ADA 30th Anniversary!

July 26, 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the ADA.   The ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is a civil rights law protecting individuals with disabilities from discrimination.

Recognizing that Americans with disabilities faced challenges in areas of employment, public services, telecommunications, transportation, and many other aspects of day-to-day life, Congress enacted the ADA in 1990.  The act was a world first – declaring that individuals who were differently-abled were entitled to equality.

The Act was signed by President George H.W. Bush in front of a crowd of over 3,000 people on the White House law.   The president stated:

“Three weeks ago we celebrated our nation's Independence Day. Today we're here to rejoice in and celebrate another 'independence day,' one that is long overdue. With today's signing of the landmark Americans for Disabilities Act, every man, woman, and child with a disability can now pass through once-closed doors into a bright new era of equality, independence, and freedom."

Today we are grateful for the law that has removed physical and non-physical barriers, changed attitudes, and opened doors.  America is a certainly a brighter and more diverse country because of it.
