April is National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness month. This month is designed to remind us to take care of ourselves.

At Bluegrass Elderlaw, we acknowledge that it’s important to manage your stress. Everyone experiences it, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

There are many health problems associated with chronic stress, including but not limited to heart disease, diabetes, headaches, depression, anxiety, and Alzheimer’s.

If you are experiencing stress, consider taking the following steps:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories.

  • Take care of yourself.

  • Take care of your body.

  • Make time to unwind.

  • Talk to others.

  • Connect with your community or faith-based organizations.

  • Avoid drugs and alcohol.

  • Eat nutritionally dense foods and avoid sugar.

  • Recognize when you need more help.

  • Keep a journal.

  • Download an app that provides relaxation exercises.

  • Exercise and eat healthy.

  • Try to get more sleep.

  • Avoid excess caffeine, especially in the later part of the day.

  • Identify and challenge negative and unhelpful thoughts.

  • Become active within your community and cultivate warm relationships.

  • Reach out to friends and family.
